Historical hints

Grappoli erbaluce - Enjoy Food & Wine

Vine variety Erbaluce, is an autochthone vine variety from Piedmont with an uncertain origin. According to some opinions, it comes from the lowest part of Monferrato, but the most accredited thesis sees it from the subalpine area of Canavese.

The name of the vine variety derives from the Latin expression “alba lux” (sunrise light) that is referred to the colour of the grapes in autumn, when the colours are warmer and more intense, like amber above all for the parts directly exposed to the sun.

There are traces of this vine variety already at the beginning of 1600, in some texts of Giovan Battista Croce, jewellery at the Duke Carlo Emanuele I that compare the grapes of Erbaluce to bright precious stones.

Erbaluce di Caluso: types of wines and organoleptic properties

Etchetta Erbaluce | Enjoy Food & Wine

This wine has a strong straw yellow colour, refined and floral bouquet and dry and fresh taste.
Thanks to the characteristics of its grapes, the vine variety is pretty versatile. These grapes, in fact, produce different types of wine, from dried wine to Spumante wines and sweet wines or Passito.

Erbaluce di Caluso DOCG is a still straw yellow wine with bright green shades, perfumes that remind field-flowers, acacia and hawthorn. The taste is fresh and dry. After three or four years of ageing, mineral and third notes come to light.

Erbaluce di Caluso Spumante DOCG: it has a light and persistent foam, fine perlage and weak straw yellow. The perfume is delicate and characteristic, the taste is dry with fruity and floral notes.

Erbaluce di Caluso Passito DOCG: is subjected to a period of withering, the grapes of Erbaluce are pressed. It is a wine with a colour that goes from the golden yellow to amber, bright clearness, elegant perfume and sweet taste, that remind the honey, jam, candied and withered fruit.

Suggested pairings
