Food labels, why do you need to read them

We all go shopping, but when it is time to choose a product or another, what we pay attention to? What make us choose?

Packaging and the brand influence it, very often we buy food that we are used to eat because our mum bought it and we are used to find in the home pantry.

What make us choose, however, which dynamic is not so important?

The cost? Where it comes from? The case?

To know what we are eating, it is important to read the food labels that are different from the nutritional ones (the latter, in fact, refers to the energetic value and proteins contained in the product). Here you can find a brief scheme of what you have to keep in mind.

How are the food labels made?

    • NAME of the product
    • INGREDIENTS: the law requires listing the ingredients in descending order from the lower to the higher quantity (the % symbol can be omitted).
    • WEIGHT (net/dripped)
    • EXPIRING DATE
    • PRODUCER
    • SOURCE BATCH
    • PRESERVATION

The food labels allow not only to understand effectively the quality of the product, but also its traceability and its composition. You should know that more information there are in a label, the more reliable and good would be the product as each producer have to write true data, according to the law. The more detailed will be the description, the more information you will have to choose the best, trusting the product that you buy.

Remind that the cost or the packaging can confuse; it is good that you always check the net weight; a bigger pack can often hide a smaller product. Do not let the size cheat you.

ATTENTION:

If you read in the packaging the text “sugar free” check always the label. Probably there will be a great quantity of derivatives (glucose, fructose or cereal syrup, corn starch or maltose) that are substances with a high glycaemic index.

In the last article we will analyse Nutritive Labels.
