Italy: first producer, but the consumption decreases

Italy, the land of wine… and for years, we gained the podium for the internal consumption as well; Surprisingly, in the new data of the Oiv (Organizzazione Internazionale della Vigna e del Vino, in English International Organization of Vineyard and Wine) Italy decreases to the fourth position, giving to Germany the podium.

Oiv spread the data of 2015 on the wine selling and consumption, and confirm the record of United States: a consumption of more than 30 millions of hectolitres, followed by France with about 27 millions and finally, Germany gained the podium reaching and overtaking Italy with 20.5 millions of hectolitres drunk in the last year.

Wine and consumption of 2015

Last year the consumption of wine has increase in comparison of 2014, recording 240 millions of hectolitres. France maintained the silver medal, however it lost the 1,2%, on the contrary the other states increased the level: United States increases the consumption of 1%, Italy a minimum of 0,3%, whereas Germany amazed with an increasing of 1,1%.

Italy put the glass aside…

Italy leaves the podium, after years of an uncertain wine consumption: in the last decade we poured one glass out of four less; the local wine consumption and purchases decreased, however the export compensate for the decreasing. We are, in fact, the first world producers with 49,5 hectolitres per year; nevertheless, the greatest part of our wine is sold abroad.

…but the export shows an historical record.

We drink less but we produce a lot and, above all, we export more; 2015 shows an historical record, 5,4 billions selling and an increasing of the 5% compared to 2014. Italian wines unloaded in the United States, where they are well appreciated; in addition United Kingdom increases its demand. The East increases the purchases becoming a new border for the local wine market: Japan and China revealed a severe growth given the increase of the Chinese population of the 18%.

The only real flop is Russia where the selling of Italian wines and Spumante nosedives. The political troubles and the food market embargo affected the selling, which decreased of the 31%.
