The United States is the greatest wine drinker

France and Italy always compete for the European podium of the larger wine consumers. It is a continuous up and down on the first position of the podium, once for the French, once for the Italians. 2015 recognized to Italy various first places in the oenological field among which the title of the largest European wine producer; however widening the point of view at a world level there’s a valid competitor for the title of the greatest consumer of the Bacchus nectar.

The United States reaches the first place for the highest consumption of wine thanks, maybe, to its wide surface extension.
The Oiv – International Organization for vineyard and wine conveys it, classifying the United Stated as the greatest consumer of wine followed by France and Italy. It is not a per capita consumption but the selling in the national market; to know that France, Italy and Portugal share the European podium for the per capita consumption.

The rank of wine drinkers

In 2014, the United States consumed almost 31 millions hectolitres counting on a continuous average growth in the last years. France is just below with its 28 millions, whereas Italy achieved the third position with a consumption of 20,4 millions of hectolitres.
Behind there are Germany, China, United Kingdom, Spain and Argentina; at the end of the top 10 there are Russia and Australia.

The favourite wine markets

Actually, the study released by the Oiv isn’t an analysis of the per capita consumption thus it doesn’t define the level of wine appreciation by the people, it rather offers an interesting overview on the most developed and increased markets in the wine field. Thus, winemakers and oenologists bet on the stars and stripes market, if you want to widen the horizons of your company abroad.
