Radicchio Route and its characteristics

 Radicchio di Treviso is a variety of chicory. The characteristics that make it unique are the dark red colour with white striping and the crispiness of the palate and its taste, typically bitter, make it unique. The origins of this vegetable are uncertain: a school of thought says that Francesco Van De Borre, a gardener that worked in Belgium, introduced the technique of whitening. It is possible that he applied the working of radicchio that the peasant commonly cultivated in the field, obtaining the current result. Another theory, instead, affirms that the peasant, preserving radicchio in the cowshed during winter, they saw that the cores, inside of go rotten they were good and crispy. To keep them fresh, they use the water of the spring.

Radicchio di Treviso has wide benefits on the organism. Anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory element reduce the aging of the cells, minerals like calcium and iron feed the bones. It prevents problems to the intestine thanks to the presence of its content of fibers.

Road sign, maps and information are at the core of the journey. The places that participate to the Radicchio Route are available to give as much information as possible. Brochure, maps and posters are shared near the places of interest. Who participate has to assure the standard foreseen by the code of conduct.

Three itineraries, the only Radicchio Route

Radicchio Route foresees three itineraries that twist and turns through important historical, social and artistic places. Veneto is rich in this places that remind the ancient events of our history that shouldn’t be forget. Palladio and its works is the main character of Veneto. He left in this places a strong proof of its talent. Along River Sile, from Treviso to Castelfranco, to know Radicchio

The first itinerary starts from Treviso, symbol of Radicchio. The city stands on the river that is the character of the working of Radicchio. In the past, radicchio was transported to Venice to be traded. Treviso is rich in art and history: the Cathedral, the church of Santa Caterina, Loggia dei Cavalieri, Palazzo dei Trecento are the mainstays of the city. Piazza dei Signori is the perfect starting point to start this tour.Old mills in particular the one of Cervara already used in the ‘300 are the perfect framework for a travel to discover the unpolluted places where it is possible discover different spices of birds and plants.

The second itinerary starts from Castelfranco and arrives in Treviso. With this journey it possible to visit the areas of cultivation of Radicchio.
